Ceramic Arts Program (Occupational Therapy)

An occupational therapist who visited our center for training suggested we include ceramics in our programs. Participants got very excited at the prospect of making their own works of art, but soon found it more difficult than they expected to produce something reasonable. Traditionally Fujioka produced high quality ceramics because of the good clay. There are plans to invite professional potters as instructors to offer full scale courses.

Akira (30) talks about his experience.

I have always been interested in ceramics arts and enjoy making things. I didn't think I could experience ceramics within the institution. The clay is kneaded, forms are made, left to dry and the forms fired. Glaze is then applied and then they are re-fired. I get excited whenever the process advances one stage. My first piece of work broke as it dried to quickly and I was mortified. Since the pieces remained I used them to decorate my room. One day I will make a more artistic one
